End the crisis

As mass demonstrations flare across Egypt, protesters have gathered to demand widespread political and human rights reform and an end to corruption, poverty and police abuse.

Protesters are demanding change, but their right to do so peacefully is not being respected.

They have been the targets of violent attack by pro-government supporters, while Egyptian authorities have failed to ensure protection of their right to freedom of expression and assembly.

Human rights activists and journalists have been harassed and detained as part of a brutal crackdown by security forces, including the military police, on independent reporting of the country’s unrest.

The Egyptian people must be able to make their voices heard and be able to organize peacefully.

Journalists and human rights activists must be able to carry out their work free from fear of intimidation or harassment. Detaining them cuts off vital access to information and escalates the risk of human rights violations taking place with impunity.

Join us in demanding an end to the crackdown and an end to the violence.  Take action today by signing our petition calling on the Egyptian authorities to immediately halt their crackdown on journalists and human rights activists and to end violent attacks carried out by their supporters on peaceful protesters.

 Vice President Omar Suleiman has been appointed to handle the situation. Join us in calling on him to:

•Immediately and unconditionally release any remaining prisoners of conscience who have been locked up for exercising their right to freedom of expression.

•Disclose immediately the whereabouts of those detained, allow them immediate access to their family members, laywers of their choice and ensure they are protected from torture and other ill-treatment.

•Ensure that protesters’ rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly are fully respected and upheld, and that they are able to demonstrate free from fear of harassment or intimidation.
