Baha\'ism, the coming danger

By: Esmat Al-Sawy

In 1260 A.H, a twenty-five year old man claimed that he is Imam Mahdi. A group of people followed him and established what is known as "Baha'is".

Two hundred years later, in a public park, Baha'is celebrated one of their religious feasts. The incident was covered by newspapers, magazines and TV channels.

This media coverage is the reason why I wrote this article. I realized that those "Baha'is" attracted some Muslims. Moreover, they started propagating their "faith" in clubs and newspapers. They composed books and printed materials calling for their "faith".

Baha'ism is named after Mirza Husayn-`Ali, the second in command. Then he was named Bahá'u'lláh. It is also called Babism after the Bab Mirza Muhammad Ali, the founder of Babism.

The latter was born in Shiraz in Iran. He studied science then worked as a merchant. At the age of twenty-five, he claimed to be the promised Mahdi. His movement acquired some supporters. Iranian scholars heard about him then they issued a fatwa charging him of blasphemy. Some said that he was insane. He was arrested by the Iranian government first in Shiraz then in Esfahan. In Naser El-deen Shah era, he was crucified in Tabriz in 1265 A.H after riots.

Failed to assassinate King Naser El-deen Shah, the majority of his followers were arrested. Among them was Mirza Husayn-`Ali, named Bahá'u'lláh.

After fightings between Babis and Shi'a, the Ottoman government sent Mirza Husayn-`Ali to Istanbul where he propagated himself claiming that he was the Promised One or man yazhiruhu'lláh, "Him Whom God shall make manifest". Most of the Babis followed him then they called themselves "Baha'is". However, Mirza Yahya, Bahá'u'lláh's brother, rejected his brother's movement and claimed he was the Promised One. Therefore, the Ottomans exiled the former and his followers to Cyprus and the latter and his supporters to Acre.

Bahá'u'lláh stayed in Acre until he died in 1309 A.H. Then his son Abbas succeeded him and was called "Abdel Baha'" or Baha' servant.

Baha'ism is a mixture of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism.

Abbas or "Baha' servant called for equality between men and women as well as the unity of language and religion. Baha'is claim that their law replaces the Islamic law (Sharia); they fast in spring for nineteen days from sunrise to sunset, their feast is Al-Nayrouz. They pray nine rak'as "a unit of prayer" in the day and night. Their Qebla is where Bahá'u'lláh is. They canceled pilgrimage and preached the destruction of the Kaaba. Moreover, they misinterpreted the Quran. They alleged that man yazhiruhu'lláh, "Him Whom God shall make manifest" is the only one who can explain what messengers have preached.

For example, they explain the verse of Quran that says, "When Joseph said unto his father: O my father! Lo! I saw in a dream eleven planets and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves unto me" as follows, Joseph here is Mirza Husayn-`Ali, the sun is Fatima, the moon is Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) and the eleven planets are the leaders to truth. They also say that Adam symbolizes reason, the Heaven is controlling the self, Ibrahim is the virtue resulting from knowledge, Isaac is the intuitive virtue and Jacob is the virtue resulting from exercise.  They do not believe in Resurrection or in Heaven and Hell. They say the Day of Judgment is when Bahá'u'lláh returns.

The Bab claimed that he was a prophet and that Bahá'u'lláh will be a prophet also. However, Bahá'u'lláh and his followers claimed that he is a god.

This malicious doctrine is given the freedom to spread which is dangerous for the new generation especially with the fragile religious teaching in schools and universities, the absence of official religious organizations and depriving sincere preachers from doing their role.

The situation is critical and needs serious measures to stop it. We call officials, thinkers and preachers to warn people against this "invented faith" in order to rescue our youth.
